Meghna river or Meghna Upper River is a river in Kishoreganj, Narsingdi, Brahmanbaria, Narayanganj, Comilla, Munshiganj and Chandpur districts of southeast of Bangladesh. The length of the river is 156 kilometers, the average width is 3400 meters and the nature of the river is spiral. Born from the mountainous region of Assam, the ‘Barak’ river is divided into two branches named Surma and Kushiaara near Sherpur in Assam. Then flowed over Sylhet district. In the Marakuli on the border of Sunamganj and Habiganj districts, these two rivers, together with the name of Kalni, progressed a little further and joined the old Brahmaputra near Bhairab Bazar and named Meghna. Then, moving further southward, they joined the Chandra river near the Padma. The meghna river is situated in the Bay of Bengal under the name of Meghna Lower river through Noakhali, Laxmipur and Bhola Island on the south. The length of the river Meghna with Surma is about 650 miles. The combination of Padma-Meghna near Chandpur is known as Meghna. From here, about 90 miles south of Meghna on the four estuarine is found in the Bay of Bengal. Their local names are Tentulia, Shahbazpur, Sandwip and Hatiya.
